PLAY-BASED THERAPY FOR WHEN WORDS CAN'T BE REACHED

Play is a child's language. It's how they learn about themselves, others and the world around them. For primary-aged children, or young people working at a primary-aged level, play-based therapy will support their self-expression, develop their coping strategies and work through the tough stuff without needing to find the words. These sessions are child-led, with children having access to a wide range of activities such as art materials, puppets, Lego, a sand tray, small world toys, sensory items and more. Josie is there to reflect, interperet and gently guide the work towards your child's individual goals.

A SAFE SPACE TO EXPLORE, REFLECT AND LEARN

Sessions at Dramascape are centered purely around your child. While younger children may need a fully indirect play space, there's plenty of opportunity for direct talking-time for older children and teens. It can take some getting used to, but once they're comfortable, the space becomes a weekly sanctuary for whatever they need to use it for. Many young people will respond well to a hybrid approach of direct and indirect; one session talking through their current challenges, the next playing Uno and doing mindful colouring. Both are okay, both are therapeutic, both work directly and indirectly towards your child's goals.

GENTLE, LOW-DEMAND INTERVENTIONS

When a young person is ready, Josie incorporates elements of evidence-based interventions such as CBT, DBT and Mindfulness. This is done in an age-appropriate way, and since the primary goal is to foster a positive, trusting relationship, it is never forced. Josie will never ask a child or young person to do something they do not want to do. These interventions might be direct, such as writing a list of things we are grateful for. Or, they might be less obvious, such as practising frustration tolerance by playing a tricky game of Jenga! However the interventions look, they will be delivered with patience, kindness and intuition, always.

NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING

As a neurodiversity-affirming practitioner and proudly neurodivergent herself, Josie works with neurodivergent traits rather than aiming to change them.

TRAUMA-INFORMED

Josie prioritises safety, choice and empowerment. She looks beyond behaviour and symptoms to reach the core of the issue, and is trained in the Children's Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT).

CHILD-LED

The young person is in control. Josie never demands changes the child isn't ready for, and works solely with what the child brings into the room with them.
